My work focuses on specific forms that have strong symbolic meaning, either to me personally or to the culture at large. Through manipulation of context my work examines underlying contradictions that I find in these symbols, either via my personal experience or observations of modern culture. For example, by contrasting the anatomical heart with the Hallmark version in the recently completed Heart series, the work questions the archetypal image of the valentine heart and labels as suspect the origins of the bilaterally bulbous form that permeates our culture. In the House series, by placing the symbolic form of the house in a variety of narrative settings, the notions of security and individuality associated with having a home are skewed so as to present a more apprehensive metaphor.

The Landing, which shows a house arriving at a beach in a turbulent ocean, reflects upon the anxieties associated with moving one's home. Cul de Sac, shows a typical suburban development, yet, in this case, the eroding landscape encroaches upon the tranquility of the indifferent housing development, threatening the security of the American dream. Often, the symbols from one distinct series merge with another in the way that the events of one's life seamlessly connect to one another. Underlying all of the work is an autobiographical search for personal meaning.
