Public Art Grants 2017

With assistance from the Ithaca City Planning Department, and funding from both a private funder and the Tompkins County Tourism Program, CAP's Public Art Grant launched in 2016, resulting in three murals completed in 2016 (Trumansburg creek, Ezra Cornell on the Tompkins County Public Library, and the Route 13 Mural mentioned below.) Four more have been funded for 2017. Two are underway in this September!

Danielle Hodgins, from Houston, Texas, was a 2016 Public Art Grant recipient and began her abstract colorful mural in the summer of 2016 on the side of the Department of Public Works building on Route 13 (just south of the Sciencenter). It was not finished in the time she had in Ithaca, as the amount of preparation and cleaning for the wall surface took weeks longer than expected. (The massive wall was imbedded with vines she had to pick out by hand.) Danielle arrived back in Ithaca on September 18th to complete the mural! The image below is the mural in progress.

Mary Beth Ihnken (Ithaca, NY) received a 2017 Public Art Grant to paint part of the exterior of the Dryden Road Collegetown Parking Garage. She began on September 19th and will work through (probably) September 25th. Mary Beth is known for quite a few murals in Ithaca and Caroline and was chosen for the garage for her depiction of blue skies, clouds at sunset, and bird silhouettes.
